Installing a pool heater is the best way to extend your swimming season and get the most enjoyment from your investment, especially here in Florida. But choosing the right type and operating it efficiently is key. This guide covers the main options and tips for optimal performance.
Electric Heat Pumps: (Like the TropiCal unit pictured earlier) These are highly energy-efficient for consistent heating in Florida’s climate. They work like a reverse air conditioner, extracting heat from the air. Initial cost is moderate, running costs are generally low. Best for maintaining temperature.
Gas Heaters (Propane/Natural Gas): Heat water very quickly, regardless of air temperature. Ideal for pools or spas used intermittently or when rapid heating is desired. Running costs can be higher depending on fuel prices.
Solar Heaters: Highest upfront cost but virtually free to run using solar panels. Effectiveness depends heavily on sunlight availability and panel size. Often used as a supplement or in very sunny locations.

Tips for Efficient Heating & Season Extension

Optimal Temperature: Most find 78-82°F (25-28°C) comfortable. Each degree higher increases energy use substantially. Find your ideal temperature and stick to it.
Run Times: Operate your pump long enough for proper filtration and turnover, which is necessary for heating. Heat pumps work best with longer run times at efficient flow rates. Gas heaters can operate for shorter periods when rapid heating is needed.
Wind Protection: Fences or landscaping that block wind can help reduce heat loss from the pool surface.
